What to Expect at Your First Dentist Appointment
Good at-home care is important, but regular dental cleanings are essential for maintaining a healthy smile. Without them, your teeth and gums can be at risk for infection and decay. We recommend visiting twice a year, or more often if you're prone to gum disease or cavities.

Cleaning Expectations
- Teeth Cleaning: The goal of a cleaning is to polish and remove plaque and tartar. Your dentist will use a special toothpaste and electronic toothbrush to clean the front and back of each tooth.
- Flossing: Your dentist or hygienist will floss between your teeth to remove food and plaque, helping keep your gums and teeth healthy. Flossing daily is important, and that's why it's included in your cleaning.
- Troubleshooting: During your exam, your dentist will check for cavities, gum issues, and other oral health problems. If something’s found, we may suggest a follow-up visit to address it.
- Setting Up Future Visits: Regular check-ups are key to great oral health. Make sure to schedule your next exam while you're here so it’s one less thing to worry about! We recommend a visit every 6 months to stay on track.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Importance of Oral Health?
Good oral hygiene is key to removing harmful bacteria in your mouth. If plaque isn't cleaned away, it can harden and lead to problems like gingivitis. A solid dental care routine and regular check-ups every 6 months will help keep your mouth healthy, preventing issues like inflammation, infection, decay, and tooth loss.
Why Get a Dental Exam?
Dental exams help us assess how well your current routine is working and give tips to prevent common issues like cavities and gum disease. They also allow us to spot problems early and fix them quickly.
How Can You Prepare for a Dental Exam?
To prepare for your dental exam, stick to good oral hygiene habits—brush twice a day and floss at least once. Before your appointment, brush your teeth to help us focus on areas that need attention. Be ready to share your medical history, insurance info, and current dental care routine. Don’t worry, there’s no judgment! We’re here to help you improve your oral health.
Don’t forget to bring:
- Dental X-rays from the last six months (we can take X-rays if you don’t have any)
- Your medical and dental history information, including any medications you’re currently prescribed
- Your dental insurance card (if applicable)
- Your parent or guardian (if you’re under 18)
How Long Does a Dental Cleaning Take?
A dental cleaning typically takes 30 to 90 minutes, depending on your oral health. During the visit, your hygienist will take X-rays, check your gums, and assess your overall oral health. Based on the evaluation, we'll decide if a regular cleaning is enough or if a deeper cleaning is needed. After the cleaning, the doctor will do a thorough exam of your teeth and mouth, including an oral cancer screening. If any treatments are needed, your doctor and hygienist will create a treatment plan for your next visit.
